Roku restart, reconnect, cache, and offline behavior
Roku persists its signed-in account, registered device, selected board, and a last-known Relay Plan, but its offline guarantees differ from the browser/Pi complete-release cache.
What you may be seeing
- The Roku was restarted, lost internet, or needs to recover from a playback/network problem.
What usually causes it
- Normal network loss/reconnect.
- A stale/corrupt local plan/cache.
- The registered screen was disconnected in the web dashboard.
- The Canvas Relay account session expired.
- Roku OS/app lifecycle requires the user to reopen the app after a device/TV restart.
Do this
- Reopen Canvas Relay after the Roku/TV restarts. The app should reuse its stored account, device registration, and board assignment.
- If internet is temporarily unavailable, do not immediately sign out or disconnect the screen; the app retains its last-known plan and retries connectivity.
- If the Roku is online but stale, publish if needed and use the device Reload command from Screens first.
- Use Clear cache only if a normal reload/re-fetch does not recover the player.
- If the account session expired, sign in again on Roku. If the screen was intentionally disconnected, the app re-registers it only while the account remains valid; otherwise return to account setup.
You know it is fixed when
- The Roku reconnects, heartbeats again, and loads the target Relay Plan for its assigned board.
Worth knowing
- Do not describe Roku as having the browser/Pi's fully verified all-assets-indefinite offline guarantee until that behavior has been physically verified across Roku asset/cache conditions.
