YouTube widget is blank, offline, heavy on Pi, or missing on Roku

The current YouTube widget is an online browser/provider player: it is muted/looping, can be heavy on Raspberry Pi, and is intentionally unsupported on native Roku.

What you may be seeing

  • A YouTube widget does not appear offline, performs poorly on Pi, or appears in browser preview but not on Roku.

What usually causes it

  • YouTube is online-only and depends on the provider player/network.
  • The embedded provider player is heavier than normal uploaded video on low-power Pi hardware.
  • The provider/iframe path has no native Roku transport in the current relay registry.

Do this

  1. Confirm the player is online if you intend to use YouTube.
  2. On Raspberry Pi or when unattended reliability matters, prefer uploading the actual permitted video asset to CanvasRelay instead of using the YouTube widget.
  3. On Roku, treat YouTube as unsupported and replace it with an uploaded CanvasRelay video when you control/have rights to the media.

You know it is fixed when

  • The chosen platform plays a supported video path reliably; Roku boards no longer depend on the unsupported YouTube iframe widget.
